As Americans, this has been an important week to reflect on the 12th anniversary of the 9/11 attacks. Here at Mercy, the tragedy of 9/11 coincides with the celebratory 12th birthday of Mercy Health Center. On September 10, 2001, Mercy opened with a prayer, and volunteers began to care for the medical, emotional, spiritual, and pharmacy needs of the patients who arrived. Sunday school classrooms served as makeshift exam rooms, and an office became the pharmacy. Twelve years later, Mercy Health Center celebrates another year of blessings in its new home – a renovated 11,000 square foot office building on Oglethorpe Avenue.
Current board chairman, David Linder, led the move to Mercy’s new home. Today Mercy’s staff and Board of Directors savored both a birthday cake and the blessings bestowed over the last twelve years. Thank you to those of you – patients and volunteers – who have helped us celebrate this week, and a special thank you to David for his leadership and graciousness to Mercy.
